Continuation of annual screening mammography and breast cancer mortality in women older than 70 years

Annals of Internal Medicine Mar 01, 2020

Garcia-Albeniz X, Hernán MA, Logan RW, et al. – Researchers conducted a large-scale, population-based, observational study of two screening strategies—continuing annual mammography and stopping screening—to assess the impact of breast cancer screening on breast cancer mortality in Medicare beneficiaries. Researchers assessed 1,058,013 beneficiaries aged 70-84 years with life expectancies of ≥ 10 years who had no previous breast cancer diagnosis and underwent screening mammography. The outcome measures included 8-year breast cancer mortality, incidence, and treatments, plus the positive predictive value of screening mammography by age group. According to findings, continuing annual breast cancer screening past age 75 years was not associated with substantial decreases in 8-year breast cancer mortality vs stopping screening.
