Contemporary prevalence of carotid stenosis in patients presenting with ischaemic stroke
British Journal of Surgery Apr 17, 2019
Cheng SF, et al. - Via this 1-year prospective observational study of consecutive patients presenting with ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), or ischemic retinal artery occlusion, researchers examined the current prevalence and management of carotid stenosis in the UK. In total, they identified 2,707 patients, half of whom had an ischemic event and most had carotid imaging (1,252 of 1,444). In one in five patients presenting with stroke or TIA, carotid stenosis is seen. Patients who had hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes and ischemic heart disease showed significant carotid stenosis. Unnecessary intervention could be avoided by a careful multidisciplinary team discussion, which should be the standard of care.
