Contemporary management of penetrating renal trauma - A national analysis
Injury Sep 18, 2019
El Hechi MW, Nederpelt C, Kongkaewpaisan N, et al. - Using the TQIP database 2010-2016, researchers sought to delineate the experience of operative and nonoperative management after penetrating renal injury in the United States. In addition, they retrospectively sought for risk factors for failure of nonoperative management (NOM). The database yielded data of 1,842 patients who had a penetrating mechanism of injury. Nonoperative management was offered to about 18% of patients with a penetrating injury to the kidney. With the appropriate selection of patients for nonoperative management, a success rate of 92% was observed indicating the high success of NOM in selected patients. Failure of nonoperative management was observed in correlation with concomitant abdominal injuries & higher-grade kidney injuries.
