Contemporary impacts of a cancer diagnosis on survival following in-hospital cardiac arrest
Resuscitation Jul 18, 2019
Guha A, et al. - Researchers investigated survival and post-arrest procedural utilization after in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) in patients with and without comorbid cancer. Using the National Inpatient Sample dataset, they retrospectively reviewed 1,893,768 hospitalizations complicated by IHCA. Of these, 112,926 occurred in patients with a history of cancer. Post-arrest procedures and survival to hospital discharge were less frequently observed for patients with a history of cancer who sustain IHCA. Findings emphasize the necessity for a broader application of potentially life-saving interventions to lower risk cancer patients who have sustained a cardiac arrest, in view of the expected rise in the rates of cancer survivorship.
