Containment of a large SARS-CoV-2 outbreak among healthcare workers in a pediatric intensive care unit
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Nov 21, 2020
Knoll RL, Klopp J, Bonewitz G, et al. - Because of the critical role of healthcare workers (HCWs) in preventing viral transmission and treating COVID-19 patients, HCWs are particularly exposed to SARS-CoV-2. Within HCWs, personnel of intensive care units (ICUs) represent an extremely vulnerable group as these are at the forefront of treating patients with a severe course of COVID-19 infection. Via this study, researchers sought to contribute to establish means of infection control protecting HCWs in the frontline of the current pandemic. They documented a large outbreak within a team of healthcare workers of a PICU, affecting almost one fifth of the entire personnel. Tests were conducted in 91 of 432 HCWs (25%). Symptoms corresponding to characteristics of COVID-19 were reported in 45 percent. Positive test for SARS-CoV-2 was reported in only 19,5% of those (8 HCWs). Infection did not occur outside the PICU. After the implementation of containment measures including wearing of surgical-masks, physical distancing and systematic testing, viral transmission was stopped.
