Contact screening and risk factors for TB among the household contact of children with active TB: A way to find source case and new TB cases

BMC Public Health Sep 26, 2019

Laghari M, et al. - Researchers undertook this prospective cross-sectional analysis to assess secondary tuberculosis (TB) cases as well as to identify the risk factors in developing TB among the household contacts (HHC) of children with active TB. Via a structured questionnaire, they interrogated 443 caregivers of 508 children with active TB receiving treatment. They found that the prevailing system of contact screening for TB led to the screening done in only 9.3% of all HHC. In multivariate analysis, statistically significant risk factors of TB among the HHC were revealed, which included HHC with TB, HHC with smoking, and contact of > 18 h with TB individual. Likely, the passive nature of the program, which mainly relies on distinctive clinical symptoms being experienced by the contacts, is responsible for the observed low rates of contacts screened. There is a need for strategies to confirm adherence with contact screening among children with active TB and to critically examine the factors accountable for TB transmission.
