Consumption of oral antibiotic formulations for young children according to the WHO Access, Watch, Reserve (AWaRe) antibiotic groups: An analysis of sales data from 70 middle-income and high-income countries
The Lancet Infectious Diseases Jan 18, 2019
Hsia Y, et al. - Using wholesale data from the IQVIA-Multinational Integrated Data Analysis System database, researchers identified oral antibiotic formulations appropriate for use in young children (defined as child-appropriate formulations [CAFs]). In addition, they estimated 2015 antibiotic consumption in reference to AWaRe antibiotic groups via analyzing wholesale antibiotic sales in 70 middle-income and high-income countries in 2015. Outcomes revealed a key role of antibiotics in the Access group in treating young children globally. The 70 countries vary greatly in CAF antibiotic consumption patterns, without a clear difference between high-income and middle-income countries. In 2015, the overall median volume of CAF antibiotic standard units sold per country was 74·5 million and the median access percentage was 76·3% among the 70 countries. They identified a low amoxicillin index.
