BMC Gastroenterology May 28, 2021
Kinoshita T, Maruyama K, Suyama K, et al. - In this randomized controlled trial, the main objective was to assess the impacts of intake of yogurt fermented with Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus OLL1073R-1 on prevention of flu among female healthcare workers. As secondary analysis, researchers examined the impacts on improving psychological quality of life (QOL) as well as QOL-related overall health. They randomized 961 women (mainly nurses, aged 20–71 years) to either the yogurt group (n = 479) or the control group (n = 482). Following yogurt consumption, significant improvement was evident in the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score. Short Form-8 Health Survey outcomes demonstrated significant intervention impacts in the General Health and Vitality scores. A prophylactic impact on constipation was conferred by daily consumption of yogurt, as seen in the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale. Findings revealed that intake of OLL1073R-1 yogurt improved quality of sleep as well as gastrointestinal condition, and thereby enhanced subjective psychological quality of life among female healthcare workers.
