Consumption of dairy products in relation to the presence of clinical knee osteoarthritis: The Maastricht Study
European Journal of Nutrition Sep 26, 2018
Denissen KFM, et al. - Given that milk consumption has been shown to be inversely associated with knee osteoarthritis (OA) in observational studies, researchers examined the link between dairy consumption and the presence of knee OA in 3,010 individuals aged 40–75 years participating in The Maastricht Study. They estimated odd ratios and 95% confidence intervals while correcting for relevant factors by means of multivariable logistic regression analyses. Compared with the general Dutch population and in other European countries, dairy intake including milk, but also cheese, was lower in this study population. Findings revealed a cross sectional association of higher intake of full-fat dairy and Dutch cheese, but not milk, with the lower presence of knee OA in this Dutch population. No significant associations were found for other dairy product categories.
