Constipation, antiepileptic drugs, and gingivitis in children and adolescents with cerebral palsy
International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry Oct 13, 2019
Ferreira ACFM, et al. - This is the first comparative study investigating the connection between intestinal constipation, use of an antiepileptic drug (AED), and gingivitis in people with spastic cerebral palsy (CP). The study sample consisted of 101 children and adolescents (aged 5 to 17 years), classified as constipated or not constipated. No differences were observed between groups regarding gender, age, BMI, and fluid intake. According to findings, mucosal inflammation evidenced by constipation and gingivitis was linked to the most neurologically compromised CAs under the use of GABA AED.
