Conservative thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid microcarcinoma
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery May 20, 2019
Nahm HJ, et al. - Researchers at Konkuk University Hospital determined the applicability of conservative thyroidectomy, including partial removal of thyroid cancer lesion, for papillary thyroid microcarcinomas (PTMC) management between August 2008 and February 2014. Four of the 79 patients (5.0%) had a recurrence, two local (2.5%) and two regional (2.5%) respectively. Temporary postoperative complications such as vocal cord paralysis and hypocalcemia have developed respectively in 1 and 1 cases, but have recovered completely over time. Overall, the investigators suggested conservative thyroidectomy, an oncologically and functionally safe alternative to thyroid lobectomy for the management of PTMC.
