Conservative thyroidectomy for papillary thyroid microcarcinoma
American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Mar 27, 2019
Nahm HJ, et al. - At Konkuk University Hospital between August 2008 and February 2014, researchers estimated the applicability of conservative thyroidectomy (including partial removal of the thyroid cancer lesion) for the management of papillary thyroid microcarcinomas (PTMC). Among 79 candidates, they noticed 5.0% (4 cases) exhibiting the recurrence ie, 2 local and 2 regional, respectively. They observed the development of temporary postoperative complications like vocal cord palsy (1 subject) and hypocalcemia (1 case). Overall, they suggested conservative thyroidectomy, an oncologically and functionally safe alternative to thyroid lobectomy for the management of PTMC.
