Conscious sedation vs rapid sequence intubation for the reduction of native traumatic hip dislocation
The American Journal of Surgery Mar 05, 2018
Bommiasamy AK, et al. - Researchers recognized traumatic hip dislocations (THD) as a rare but critical illness that requires prompt evaluation and treatment. In this work, they investigated if the painful reduction of a dislocated hip should be first attempted using primary conscious sedation (PCS) or primary general anesthesia (PGA). They noticed that clinicians treating patients with a THD can utilize either PCS or PGA with many patients safely reduced under PCS. However, in patients presenting ≥6 h after time of injury, general anesthesia showed a higher success rate then conscious sedation.
