Congenital heart disease and risk of cardiovascular disease: A meta-analysis of cohort studies
Journal of the American Heart Association May 15, 2019
Wang T, et al. - Via a meta-analysis of cohort studies, researchers examined the link between congenital heart disease (CHD) and risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Via a systematic literature search, they identified studies involving CHD survivors and reporting the risk of CVD, stroke, heart failure, and coronary artery heart disease in these subjects. Overall 9 cohort studies with 684,200 participants were analyzed. For CVD, stroke, heart failure, and for coronary artery heart disease, 3.12, 2.46, 5.89, and 1.50, respectively, was the estimated overall combined relative risks for people with CHD vs controls. Findings revealed an association of increased risk of CVD in later life, although it remained unclear if this link was confounded by a risk factor profile of CVD among CHD survivors or if CHD represents an independent risk factor.
