Congenital heart disease and autism: A case-control study
Pediatrics Nov 09, 2019
Sigmon ER, et al. - In this 1:3 case-control study, researchers analyzed administrative data from children enrolled in the US Military Health System from 2001 to 2013 in order to determine the link between congenital heart disease (CHD) and autism spectrum disorder (AuSD), and to identify specific CHD lesions with higher odds of AuSD development. The study sample consisted of children with International Classification of Disease, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification codes for AuSD (n = 8,760) who were matched with controls based on date of birth, sex, and enrollment time frame (n = 26,280). Overall, increased odds of developing AuSD were observed in children with CHD. In addition, an increased risk was observed in relation to specific lesions such as atrial septal defects and ventricular septal defects.
