Condom use at coitarche among men in non-steady relationships in the United States, 2006–2013
Journal of Adolescent Health Aug 07, 2021
Nguyen BT, Violette C, et al. - Assessing US National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) data from 2006 to 2013, researchers identified that men in non-steady adolescent relationships and with mixed feelings about having sex commonly report condomless coitarche.
Among men who reported ever having intercourse, those whose first sexual relationship was reported as non-steady were analyzed, for whom condoms are recommended for preventing both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.
Use of a condom at coitarche was not reported by nearly half (43%) of men aged 15–44 in the US during a non-steady relationship.
An independent association of condomless coitarche was observed with initiating sex before the age of 15 and having sex with a younger female partner.
