Concussion incidence and trends in 20 high school sports
Pediatrics Nov 09, 2019
Kerr ZY, et al. - In this descriptive epidemiology study, researchers assessed the epidemiology of concussions in 20 high school sports from 2013–2014 to 2017–2018 school years. Data on injury and athlete exposure (AE) was offered to the National High School Sports-Related Injury Surveillance Study (High School Reporting Information Online) by a convenience sample of high school athletic trainers. They computed concussion rates per 10,000 AEs with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and distributions. For an overall rate of 4.17 per 10,000 AEs (95% CI: 4.09 to 4.26), 9,542 concussions were documented. The highest concussion rate (10.40 per 10,000 AEs) was reported for football. Findings revealed a decline in the rates of football practice-associated concussions and recurrent concussions across all sports. Girls vs boys demonstrated higher concussion rates among gender-comparable sports. A possible link between shifts in concussion rates and alterations in concussion incidence, diagnosis, and management, was suggested.
