Concurrent use of opioids with benzodiazepines or nonbenzodiazepine sedatives among patients with cancer referred to an outpatient palliative care clinic
Cancer Sep 05, 2019
Ali Haider A, Azhar A, Nguyen K, et al. - Among patients with cancer, the frequency and trend of concurrent opioid/benzodiazepines (BZD)-sedatives (S) use and its associated risk factors were examined. For this work, researchers randomly selected data of 1,500 patients who were referred to the outpatient palliative care clinic at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center between the calendar years of 2011 and 2016. In 2011, concurrent opioids/BZD-S were prescribed to 96 of 221 patients with cancer (43%) at the time of referral to the palliative care clinic. A progressive decline in this rate to 67 of 217 patients (31%) was observed by 2016. Its use was observed to be correlated with anxiety, white race, and poor Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status.
