Concurrent chemoradiotherapy with S-1 for older patients with esophageal cancer
JAMA Aug 11, 2021
Ji Y, Du X, Zhu W, et al. - Concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) with S-1 affords a tolerable and effective option to treat older patients with esophageal cancer.
Most older patients with esophageal cancer are not able to complete the standard CCRT.
This randomized phase 3 clinical trial involved 298 older patients with esophageal cancer.
Patients, stratified by age and tumor length, were randomized (1:1) to receive either CCRT with S-1 or radiotherapy (RT) alone.
Significant improvement in 2-year overall survival was achieved with CCRT with S-1 vs RT alone (53.2% vs 35.8%).
No significantly higher incidence of grade 3 or higher toxic effects was noted except for leukopenia (9.5% vs 2.7%).
