Concomitant hiatal hernia repair is more common in laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy than during laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: An analysis of 130,772 cases
Obesity Surgery Dec 12, 2018
Docimo S, et al. - In view of the observation that gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and hiatal hernia (HH) develop in correlation with obesity, researchers assessed practice patterns regarding concomitant HH repair (HHR) during laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). The analyzed the 2015 Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program database to determine the incidence of concomitant HHR with LSG or LRYGB. Outcomes revealed that SG patients underwent concomitant HHR more commonly, despite less GERD, compared to those who underwent RYGB. The marked difference in the intraoperative management of HH during bariatric surgeries did not allow the assessment of the long-term effects of bariatric surgery on GERD.
