Computed tomography rates and estimated radiation-associated cancer risk among injured children treated at different trauma center types

Injury Sep 24, 2018

Sathya C, et al. - Given a higher vulnerability of children to computed tomography (CT) radiation and its related cancer risk, researchers evaluated CT rates among injured children treated at pediatric (PTC), mixed (MTC), or adult trauma centers (ATC) and estimated the resulting differential in potential cancer risk. At 130 US trauma centers participating in the Trauma Quality Improvement Program, children aged ≤ 18 years with blunt injury AIS ≥ 2 treated from 2010-2013 were identified. Compared to PTC, injured children at ATC and MTC were more likely to undergo CT. Across centers, children with low injury severity, fall injury mechanism, and adolescent age are most vulnerable to differential imaging practices. This suggests the necessity for quality improvement initiatives aimed at reducing heterogeneity in CT usage across trauma centers to reduce pediatric radiation exposure and cancer risk.
