Computational fluid dynamics to evaluate the effectiveness of inferior turbinate reduction techniques to improve nasal airflow

JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery Jan 31, 2018

Lee TS, et al. - Researchers aimed to use computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to evaluate the airflow changes after reduction along different portions of the inferior turbinate. In this work, individual patient anatomy seemed to influence the effectiveness of partial inferior turbinate reduction (ITR) and target location. Reducing the full length of inferior turbinate likely provides the most consistent improvement in nasal airflow in a nasal airway surgery. For partial ITR, they suggested individualizing the site of reduction to account for the wide variability in the inferior turbinate anatomy.
