Comprehensive management of infected preauricular sinuses/cysts
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Sep 23, 2019
Isaacson G - In this investigation involving 415 patient, the authors studied a single-surgeon, 16-year experience with the management of infected preauricular sinuses/cysts. Participants in the study were children (aged 0 to 18 years) with symptomatic preauricular sinuses/cysts. The study sample consisted of patient encounters involved preauricular sinuses/cysts. Findings suggested that treatment remains controversial for infected preauricular sinuses/cysts. Before definitive surgery, infection control is desirable, but not compulsory. Chronic preauricular abscesses can be managed without resection of the abscess wall or overlying skin by sinus/cyst excision and subcutaneous abscess curettage. This contributes to consistent control and cosmesis that is beneficial.
