Complications of tissue expansion in the head and neck
Head & Neck Dec 08, 2019
Azzi JL, et al. - In this investigation involving 7,058 individuals, researchers presented a comprehensive review of the current state of evidence regarding complications following tissue expansion in the head and neck. Via conducting a systematic literature search, all studies reporting complications of tissue expansion in the head and neck between 2000 and 2019 were identified. Findings suggested an association of tissue expansion with an overall complication rate of 8.73%. Extrusion and hematoma were the most common complications. Overall complications in the scalp were highest and the mastoid was lowest. Complications in the non-subcutaneous plane were more common with expansion. Systematic reviews like these can help inform clinical guidelines and provide practitioners with an evidence-based reference to improve informed consent in the absence of large clinical trials.
