Complications of neck drains in thyroidectomies: A systematic review and meta‐analysis
The Laryngoscope Oct 09, 2020
Soh TCF, et al. - Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta‐analysis to update the currently available evidence base concerning intraoperative placement of neck drains in thyroidectomy patients. A comprehensive literature search for randomized control trials evaluating postoperative complications linked with neck drains was performed using four databases: Medline, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Cochrane, and 743 articles were identiifed initially. Of those, final quantitative synthesis involved 16 articles. Findings suggest overall higher odds of hematomas, surgical site infections, and longer hospital stays in drained patient group. Hence, abondoning this practice of neck drain insertions in cases who have undergone thyroidectomies is recommended.
