Complicating effects of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome on the severity of adult asthma

Journal of Asthma Sep 02, 2019

Oyama B, Tsuburai T, Tsuruoka H, et al. - Sixty patients who were under treatment for bronchial asthma (BA) in April 2016 and March 2018, who also underwent portable polysomnography (PSG) for suspected obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), were assessed by the researchers in order to check the hypothesis that some factors detect SAS in asthmatic patients and to examine the correlation between BA and OSAS by calculating the apnea-hypopnea index, in BA patients who were assessed for suspected OSAS by via simple PSG. Investigators found that although BA patients with OSAS had good respiratory function, their BA was more severe than patients without OSAS, suggesting that OSAS could exacerbate BA. PSG outcomes were not predicted by background factors and asthma parameters, and patients with suspected OSAS should be proactively assessed using PSG.
