Complicated appendicitis: Immediate operation or trial of nonoperative management?
American Journal of Surgery Jan 09, 2019
Nimmagadda N, et al. - Researchers compare clinical outcomes of patients with complicated appendicitis undergoing an immediate operation vs a trial of non-operative management. They included 101 adult patients (≥ 18 years) with complicated appendicitis; of these, 36 patients received an initial trial of nonoperative management. Nonoperative protocol successfully managed the majority of patients with complicated appendicitis, however, its failure was associated with a prolonged hospital stay. Percutaneous drainage of the intraabdominal abscess was often required for patients who underwent an immediate operation.
