Complicated appendiceal diverticulosis vs low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms: A major diagnostic dilemma

Histopathology Jun 13, 2019

Lowes H, et al. - Via a formal case control study of 74 cases of complicated appendiceal diverticular disease, the contributors intended to research and identify the frequency of complicated diverticular disease of the appendix (ADD) shows histological mimicking low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) and to make an appropriate diagnosis by following the guidance on the useful histopathological features. Significant association between ADD and LAMN, loss of lamina propria, a filiform architecture and hypermucinosis with low grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms were noted. Crucial correlation among mucosal neuromas were and diverticular disease of the appendix was also noted. To distinguish complicated diverticular disease of the appendix from LAMNs and emphasize the difficulties experienced by diagnostic pathologists in diagnosiis of the complicated appendiceal diverticulosis, the study highlighting important pathological features, was concluded as the representing the largest series in the world literature. Although, no risk of transcoelomic spread in appendiceal diverticulosis but a remarkable risk in LAMNs was noticed.
