Completeness of salpingectomy intended for ovarian cancer risk reduction
Gynecologic Oncology Nov 11, 2019
Wong JWH, et al. - Via involving women without a history of ovarian cancer who were undergoing salpingoophorectomy at a single institution in Honolulu, Hawaii, researchers assessed the completeness of salpingectomy intended for ovarian cancer risk reduction. In total, 107 ovaries were analyzed. This was the largest blinded study ever carried out to investigate ovaries for residual salpingeal tissue following salpingectomy. Furthermore, this was the unique study to contrast learner vs attending outcomes in this setting. Data reported that over 94% of salpingectomies led to the complete elimination of salpingeal tissue. There was no difference between surgeon level and surgery type of the ovaries with residual salpingeal tissue, but the study was not driven to detect this. The continued clinical practice of prophylactic salpingectomy for ovarian cancer risk reduction was supported in this investigation.
