Competing risk analyses of overall survival and cancer-specific survival in patients with combined hepatocellular cholangiocarcinoma after surgery

BMC Cancer Mar 04, 2019

He C, et al. - Researchers enlisted a training cohort of 230 patients diagnosed with combined hepatocellular cholangiocarcinoma (CHCC) in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) to investigate risk factors influencing overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS). They also developed nomograms to predict survival based on a large population-based cohort. For external validation, 99 patients were also extracted from Sun Yat-Sen University Cancer Center. In both cohorts, the established nomograms were well calibrated; for OS prediction and for CSS prediction, the respective concordance indexes (C-index) of 0.652 and 0.659 and 0.706 and 0.763 were reported for training and validation cohorts, respectively. Overall, the established nomograms were well validated. In patients with CHCC after surgery, using these nomograms, an improved prediction of survival risks and could steer management.
