Competing mortality in oropharyngeal carcinoma according to human papillomavirus status
Head & Neck Apr 19, 2019
Lop J, et al. - Four hundred twenty-three patients with oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPC) with known human papillomavirus (HPV) status were retrospectively studied to assess the differences in the competing causes of death as a function of the HPV status. Fifty-three (12.5%) patients were HPV-positive among the included patients. Observations revealed lower OPC cancer-specific survival, second primary neoplasm survival, and noncancer-related causes survival among patients with HPV-negative tumors than those with HPV-positive tumors. Better overall survival was reported for HPV-positive OPC than HPV-negative OPC.
