Comparison of ultrasound-guided vs landmark-based corticosteroid injection for carpal tunnel syndrome: A prospective randomized trial
The Journal of Hand Surgery Apr 05, 2019
Roh YH, et al. - To analyze the efficiency and complications of US-guided steroid injections vs landmark-based injections for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), authors estimated 102 subjects with CTS into 2 groups viz, landmark-based injection and ultrasound (US)-guided injection. They noticed comparable Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaires (BCTQ) symptom and function scores in the 2 groups throughout the 24-week follow-up period. They also found significantly lower (better) symptom scores at 4-week follow-up in the US-guided injection group. They reported carpal tunnel surgery in 12 subjects in the landmark-based injection group and 9 candidates in the US-guided injection group after 24 weeks. They recorded more prevalence of symptoms of median nerve irritation in subjects with landmark-based injections (14%) vs those with US-guided injection (2%).
