Comparison of ultrasound guidance vs clinical assessment alone for management of pediatric skin and soft tissue infections

Lam SHF, et al. - Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) guidance was compared with clinical assessment alone regarding its impact on the management of pediatric skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) in the Emergency Department (ED) setting. Participants comprised 321 children (327 lesions) ages 6 months to 18 years presenting to participating EDs with SSTIs ≥ 1 cm. Findings revealed no decreased ED treatment failure rate or process outcomes in pediatric SSTI patients in association with POCUS use. However, in approximately one in four cases, POCUS changed the management plan.
