Comparison of topical 5-fluorouracil and interferon alfa-2b as primary treatment modalities for ocular surface squamous neoplasia
American Journal of Ophthalmology Feb 25, 2019
Venkateswaran N, et al. - A total of 54 subjects were studied in this retrospective, comparative, interventional case series to examine the effectiveness of topical 5-fluorouracil 1% (5FU) vs interferon alfa-2b 1 MIU/mL (IFN) eye drops as primary treatment modalities for ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN). More Hispanics candidates were handled with 5FU. They noticed the recurrence of lesions in 11.5% eyes among 52 eyes whose OSSN were resolved with 5FU whereas 5.1% of lesions recurred in 39 eyes whose OSSN resolved with IFN. They noted 1-year recurrence rates, 11.4% with 5FU and 4.5% with IFN. They found significant eyelid edema and tearing with 5FU. Overall, they suggested both modalities with a higher frequency of tumor resolution and low recurrence rates as well as effective treatment options for OSSN.
