Comparison of three surgical approaches for thoracolumbar junction (T12-L1) tuberculosis: A multicentre, retrospective study
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders Nov 19, 2019
Zeng Y, Cheng P, Tan J, et al. - The medical records of thoracolumbar junction tuberculosis (T12-L1) persons (n = 177) from January 2005 to January 2015 were obtained and analyzed in order to contrast the safety and efficiency of three distinct procedures for thoracolumbar junction tuberculosis through a multicentre retrospective study. Patients underwent anterior debridement and instrumented fusion (n = 45), anterior combined with posterior debridement and instrumented fusion (n = 52) and posterior-only debridement and instrumented fusion (n = 80). Bone fusion and pain relief was attained by all three surgical approaches. Cases with neurological deficiencies had various degrees of betterment following surgery. In summary, for individuals with thoracolumbar junction (T12-L1) tuberculosis, in the correction of kyphosis and maintenance of spinal stability, the posterior-only procedure is superior to the anterior-only procedure. Moreover, the posterior-only procedure is suggested since it attains the same efficiency as combined procedure with shorter operation time, less blood loss and trauma.
