Comparison of three different cranio-cervical decompression procedures in children with Chiari malformation type I: Does the surgical technique matter?
Pediatric Neurosurgery Sep 16, 2017
Gallo P, et al. - This study compared the clinical and radiological outcome of 3 different cranio-cervical decompression techniques (CCD) performed in a single paediatric centre. Researchers identified bony decompression (BD) as a safe and effective procedure with comparable clinical and radiological outcomes to opening of the dura with watertight expansile duroplasty (DOPD) in children with Chiari malformation type I (CM1). They recognized a higher risk of post-operative complications and worse clinical outcome when opening of the dura without duroplasty (DOWD) was performed.
