Comparison of the utility of clinical breast examination and MRI in the surveillance of women with a high risk of breast cancer
Clinical Radiology Dec 13, 2019
Mihalco SP, et al. - For women at high risk of breast cancer, 385 breast surveillance MRI examinations and clinical breast examinations (CBE) were carried out in order to evaluate surveillance MRI and CBE that was done for women at high risk of breast cancer to ascertain recall and cancer detection rates. In the present study, the unparalleled sensitivity of breast MRI surveillance was sustained by the high cancer detection rate. Moreover, any breast cancers through CBE was not recognized in the present study, implying it is not a significant element of the surveillance program of high-risk women. Additionally, in the present study or by other studies in the literature, the current UK guidelines suggesting a target recall rate of 7% were not reached, collectively proposing that the guidelines may not be contemplative of what is achievable in clinical practice.
