Comparison of the impact of open and laparoscopic inguinal hernia operations on male sexual function and pain during sexual activity
Andrologia Sep 30, 2021
Aykanat IC, Comcali B, Aslan Y, et al. - Comparing men who had surgery with the open or laparoscopic total extraperitoneal hernia repair techniques, it was found that the laparoscopy group experienced a better improvement in sexual parameters and in pain during sexual intercourse, however, both hernia repair techniques exerted a positive effect on sexual function and pain during sexual activity.
Two groups of patients were formed based on the technique used during the operation: the Lichtenstein hernia repair open technique (n = 63) and the laparoscopic total extraperitoneal repair technique (n = 57).
Significant improvement in postoperative sexual function score, vs preoperative period, was evident in both groups, but the laparoscopy group showed a higher change (6.8 ± 3.7) than the open group (4.3 ± 4.4).
Significant reduction was seen in postoperative pain during sexual activity score vs the preoperative period in both groups, but a higher amount of decrease was evident in the laparoscopy group (1.8 ± 0.9) vs the other (1.1 ± 1.4).
