Comparison of the financial burden of survivors of head and neck cancer with other cancer survivors
JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery Feb 27, 2019
Massa ST, et al. - Among 16,771 candidates, researchers analyzed the financial burden of survivors of head and neck cancer (HNC) vs other cancer survivors. They calculated the financial strain on candidates as relative out-of-pocket expenses. They found an association of higher relative out-of-pocket expenses with unemployment (5.13% for employed cases vs 2.35% for unemployed subjects), public insurance (5.35% for those with public insurance vs 2.87% for those with private insurance), poverty (13.07% for poor subjects vs 2.06% for high-income cases), and lower health status. They recorded an additional burden due to HNC to previously financially constrained people in the form of increased total and relative investments.
