Comparison of the effects of corticosteroid and hyaluronic acid‐carboxylmethylcellulose (HA‐CMC) solution on selective nerve root block (SNRB) for lumbar radiculopathy: A prospective, double‐blind, randomized controlled clinical trial
Pain Practice Apr 23, 2021
Ko S, Lee JJ, Nam J, et al. - Researchers compared hyaluronic acid‐carboxymethylcellulose (HA‐CMC) solution vs corticosteroids for potency with respect to lower leg radiating pain (LLRP) improvement and functional outcome. Participants were 44 patients suffering from LLRP because of lumbar spinal stenosis and had no neurological symptoms requiring surgery. In Group A with 22 patients, injection with cocktail A (local anesthetics, corticosteroid) was delivered, and in group B with 22 patients, injection with cocktail B (local anesthetics, HA‐CMC) was administered. In all time periods, visual analog scale (VAS) scores and VAS improvement over time, Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores and ODI improvement over time, and short form ‐36 (SF‐36) PCS scores and SF‐36 MCS scores, all did not differ statistically between the two groups. Keeping in mind the corticosteroids-induced adverse effects, and similar LLRP improvements, functional outcome, and quality of life, experts concluded that HA‐CMC solution may serve as an alternative to corticosteroid in selective nerve root block.
