Comparison of the Effectiveness of universal and targeted iodine supplementation in pregnant women: A randomized controlled trial
Gynecologic and Obstetric Investigation Mar 30, 2020
Tinna T, et al. - The effectiveness of universal and targeted iodine supplementation strategies is determined via performing a randomized controlled trial involving low-risk Thai pregnant women. Two hundred and eight women were randomized either to the study group, in which iodine supplementation was varied based on median urine iodine concentration, or the control group, which received universal supplementation. Iodine insufficiency was observed in more than half of the pregnant women. Outcomes revealed similar effectiveness of the 2 strategies, universal and targeted supplementation, in prevention of iodine deficiency. However, targeted supplementation is identified as better in avoiding over-supplementation.
