Comparison of the effectiveness of interventions for reducing radiation doses in patients undergoing CT: A randomized clinical trial

Smith-Bindman R, Chu P, Wang Y, et al. - Researchers explored the efficacy of 2 interventions to reduce radiation doses in patients undergoing CT. A randomized clinical trial was designed to enroll 864,080 adults older than 18 years who had undergone CT of the abdomen, chest, combined abdomen and chest, or head at 100 facilities in 6 countries between November 1, 2015, and September 21, 2017. Between October 4, 2017, and December 14, 2018, data analysis was conducted. Primary endpoints included the proportion of high-dose CT scans and mean effective dose at the facility level. Secondary outcomes were organ doses were considered as secondary endpoints. The study reveals that medical imaging facilities can apply detailed feedback on CT doses combined with specific suggestions and an educational quality improvement program to decrease radiation doses without compromising the quality of images.
