Comparison of T-piece and pressure support ventilation as spontaneous breathing trials in critically ill patients: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Critical Care Mar 06, 2020
Li Y, et al. - Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to elucidate the preferable spontaneous breathing trial (SBT) (T-piece or pressure support ventilation [PSV]). Searching the PubMed, Cochrane, and Embase databases from inception to July 31, 2019, they included 10 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with 3,165 patients in this meta-analysis. These RCTs involved adult patients (> 18 years) who underwent at least two different SBT methods. The analysis of outcomes suggests comparable predictive power of T-piece and PSV as SBTs for successful extubation in critically ill patients. Further, the two groups showed no significant difference in the rate of reintubation, ICU and hospital length of stay, and ICU and hospital mortality.
