Comparison of symptoms and RNA levels in children and adults with SARS-CoV-2 infection in the community setting
JAMA Jun 16, 2021
Chung E, Chow EJ, Wilcox NC, et al. - Researchers sought to report on the association of the presence of symptoms with SARS-CoV-2 RNA levels in children vs adults in the community. They conducted a cross-sectional study of 555 children and adults with SARS-CoV-2 confirmed and identified higher SARS-CoV-2 RNA levels (as indicated by lower mean cycle threshold values) among symptomatic individuals vs asymptomatic individuals. RNA levels did not differ between asymptomatic children and asymptomatic adults or between symptomatic children and symptomatic adults. This community-based study thus suggests higher SARS-CoV-2 RNA levels in symptomatic individuals regardless of age.
