Comparison of survival between patients with single vs multiple primary cutaneous melanomas
JAMA Dermatology Jul 02, 2019
El Sharouni MA, et al. - In this retrospective, population-based cohort study, researchers evaluated overall survival between patients with a single primary melanoma compared to those with multiple primary melanomas. They included 54,645 single primary melanomas and 4,967 multiple primary melanomas. Data reported that the median Breslow thickness declined from 0.90 mm for the first melanoma to 0.65 mm for the second melanoma. Findings revealed that there was a significant reduction in Breslow thickness between the first and second multiple primary melanoma. Significantly worse overall survival was seen among patients with multiple primary melanomas vs patients with a single primary melanoma. These results indicate that for patients with multiple primary melanomas, more stringent follow-up strategies may be needed. The prospect of dying was a statistically significant 31% higher among patients with multiple primary melanomas.
