Comparison of [18F] FDG-PET/MRI and clinical findings for assessment of suspected lumbar facet joint pain: A prospective study to characterize candidate nonanatomic imaging biomarkers and potential impact on management
American Journal of Neuroradiology Oct 16, 2019
Lehman VT, Diehn FE, Broski SM, et al. - Ten individuals with clinically suspected facetogenic low back pain, with a specification of particular facet joints associated clinically, were prospectively enrolled in this study in order to evaluate a standardized FDG-PET/MRI protocol in such patients, with ascertainment of the concordance of imaging and clinical findings. A low concordance of change in perifacet signal and FDG activity with clinically related facet joints was found, which in turn, could symbolize either the potential to transform patient management or a lack of biomarker exactitude. Hence, to further examine the clinical use of these findings, further larger randomized studies with the application of comparative medial branch blocks would be beneficial.
