Comparison of short and long term cardiovascular outcomes after bariatric surgery in patients with vs without coronary artery disease
The American Journal of Cardiology Nov 10, 2019
Pirlet C, Biertho L, Poirier P, et al. - Researchers examined patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) undergoing bariatric surgery to determine the short- and long-term cardiovascular outcomes in these individuals. They used a dedicated database to select patients with a history of CAD. They matched 249 patients with chronic CAD with 249 patients without CAD following propensity score matching. Participants were followed-up for 7.4 years (interquartile range: 4.1-11.5; maximum 22 years). Significantly higher mortality (mainly cardiac mortality) was observed in the CAD group compared with the non–CAD group throughout follow-up. Findings revealed a higher risk of early and late major adverse cardiocerebral events in patients with severe obesity and CAD referred to bariatric surgery vs non-CAD severely obese patients.
