Comparison of several methods for pain management after video-assisted thoracic surgery for pneumothorax: An observational study
BMC Anesthesiology Jul 10, 2019
Allain PA, et al. - In this monocentric prospective observational cohort study, researchers compared various methods for postoperative pain management in terms of their analgesic efficacy following video-assisted thoracic surgery for spontaneous pneumothorax. According to the attending physician's preference, patients were administered systemic analgesia alone (n = 15); combined with a continuous paravertebral block (n = 9); combined with a continuous serratus plane block (n = 19); or single-shot serratus plane block (n = 16). Findings revealed no significant difference with regard to mean pain scores and morphine intake between the 4 groups. They concluded that some benefits could be derived by administering serratus plane block combined with continuous infusion through a catheter.
