Comparison of risk-standardized readmission rates of surgical patients at safety-net and non–safety-net hospitals using Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and American Hospital Association data
JAMA Surgery Jan 19, 2019
Talutis SD, et al. - Researchers compared safety-net hospitals (SNHs) and non-SNHs regarding readmission rates among surgical patients after discharge. Further, they investigated if hospital characteristics account for some of the variations. In this observational retrospective study of 1,252,505 patients with surgical admissions, data from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s 2011-2014 State Inpatient Databases for 4 geographically varied states were linked with data from the 2014 American Hospital Association annual survey. Safety-net hospitals displayed slightly higher readmission rates for surgical patients after controlling for hospital characteristics and patient factors.
