Comparison of peripheral nerve block and spinal anesthesia in terms of postoperative mortality and walking ability in elderly hip fracture patients: A retrospective, propensity-score matched study
Clinical Interventions in Aging May 19, 2021
Fu G, Li H, Wang H, et al. - In this study, impacts of peripheral nerve block (PNB) and spinal anesthesia (SA) on one-year mortality and walking ability were compared among elderly hip fracture patients who underwent hip arthroplasty. This study involved 316 patients, of whom 200 received SA and 116 received PNB. Post-propensity score matching, 89 patients in each group were matched. Lower 30- and 90-day mortality but higher hospitalization cost was observed in relation to PNB, among elderly hip fracture patients who had hip arthroplasty. However, the anesthesia types were not related to one-year mortality, one-year walking ability, major complications, and length of stay.
